The Santorini Volcano

The island of Santorini (or Thira) is home to a still active volcano that is submerged within the centre of the island itself. The first recorded eruption of the volcano is in 1500 BC although many scientists believe the island was itself created by an eruption of the volcano before this. This chain of thought is supported through some of the tales from Greek mythology that tell of the island being created by a miracle. Scientists believe this miracle was actually the island being forced out of the sea by the violence of the volcano’s eruption.
