Santorini the Lost Atlantis

Santorini and the Legend of Atlantis

Many people believe that Santorini once was the Lost City of Atlantis
The mythological nature of Santorini Island which is part of the Cyclades chain of Greek islands spanning the Aegean sea that divides Turkey and Greece has long been documented. Greek legend points to the island being created as part of a miracle which can be proved by the scientific assertion that the island was actually created as a result of a titanic eruption of the islands still active volcano sometime prior to the Bronze Age.
There is also a connection, although somewhat tenuous of the island being connected with the legendary lost city of Atlantis. Tourists who stay in Santorini luxury hotels can actually hear from the staff and locals how the Greek philosopher Plato made the assertion if interpreted correctly that the city of Atlantis was part of Santorini island and was populated by the islands previous civilization the Minoans.
Plato tells about an island of circular shape and concentric structures. Santorini (Thera, Thira) does have an impressive concentric geographic setting and seems that had it before the Minoan eruption as well. Studies that have been done the latest 30 years in Akrotiri excavations show that the structures of this ancient city were concentric indeed. The famous mural in the West House of Akrotiri (studied by Heiken and McCoy in 1990) shows a flowering landscape of an island and the departing Therean fleet and some concentric water-land structures as well.
Some people believe that Atlantis got its name from Atlantic Ocean... This is wrong of course. The name of Atlantis derived from Atlas, the giant of Greek mythology who held the sky upon his shoulders.
The race of the Atlantians was strong, tall and healthy, they lived in peace and had all the virtues. But as the years were passing, they became sinful and involved in crimes. They started to fight against other cities and subjected other races to their cruel power. Only the Athenians (the citizens of Athens), had their own army, fleet and moral power by that time and were able to defeat and stop Atlantians from subduing the world. Because of that bad behavior of Atlantians, the Gods' anger against Atlantis was so strong, that they created  a tremendous volcano eruption and an earthquake that destroyed it in a single day and sunk it into the sea, covering everything with lava and volcanic ash.
Although there is no actual evidence, the local legend and some of the names of Santorini hotels still point to a connection and the centre of the island which has actually re-submerged into the ocean (sunk into the sea by the anger of Gods) as a result of a massive eruption in the bronze age also fuels speculation that the islands central crater (the caldera) may have been the location of the lost city of Atlantis.
Certainly this connection does not harm the island fabulous and mystical reputation and tourist flock by the thousands to Santorini hotels each year to enjoy the unique geological effects of the islands many eruptions. These effects range from allowing Santorini hotels to be perched perilously close to three hundred meter high cliff top edges, to allowing the ongoing development of fabulous beach side Santorini hotels. The overall result of the Atlantis myth is that it gives the somewhat mystical nature of the islands natural geology even more mystery as visitors ponder what may have originally been there.

We probably will never know for sure if Atlantis was really existed...
But Santorini exists and is considered as one of the best holiday destinations in the world!

What Makes Santorini So Attractive?

Is it because of the uniqueness of Santorini luxury hotels?
Is it because of the impressive landscapes?
Or is it because of the magnificent Santorini sunsets?

Santorini Island is part of the chain of Greek islands known as the Cyclades and is situated on the southern part of Cyclades Islands cluster, near the islands of Ios and Anafi. Usually referred to by the Greeks by its official name of Thira (or Thera) the name Santorini comes from the combination of Santa and Irini (means Peace in Greek). The island itself is quite small with a total area of only ninety six square kilometers but has an extensive coastline that stretches for almost seventy kilometers. As a result the island has a large number of different beaches some of which are sandy and other which are pebble.

This variety of beaches combined with the large number of Santorini luxury hotels that can offer beach side accommodation or up on the cliffs, makes it a very popular destination for many of the sun seeking tourists. This however, is not what makes the island so unique. As part of the island itself and submerged within a large basin in the centre of the island is a largely dormant volcano (caldera) that was instrumental in both the formation of the island and the subsequent geographical and geological qualities that make it so breathtaking.

The Santorini Volcano

The island of Santorini (or Thira) is home to a still active volcano that is submerged within the centre of the island itself. The first recorded eruption of the volcano is in 1500 BC although many scientists believe the island was itself created by an eruption of the volcano before this. This chain of thought is supported through some of the tales from Greek mythology that tell of the island being created by a miracle. Scientists believe this miracle was actually the island being forced out of the sea by the violence of the volcano’s eruption.

The presence of the volcano and its continued activity of the previous millennium and more may also have caused the downfall of several previous civilizations that are thought to have lived on the island. Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of civilizations dating back as far as 1300 BC. It is thought that several civilizations may have fallen foul of the volcano’s activity and been decimated only to be replaced with a new civilization as the geopolitical situation constantly evolved through the region.

Holidays in Santorini luxury hotels

Why Santorini for a Luxury Holiday?
The Greek islands known as the Cyclades are an island chain that stretches through part of the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The island of Santorini has a ferry connection with Athens (Piraeus and Rafina Port) and the other islands in Cyclades and with Crete and is particularly popular for tourists and is a regular stopover point for many of the luxury cruises that meander through the Greek islands for seven or fourteen days.

As a result of these cruises and the relatively high average income of the visitors they bring there are a considerable number of Santorini luxury hotels on offer particularly in the islands capital of Fira (where is the main port) which is just a short donkey or cable car ride from the port of the island up a cliff face.
Maison Des Lys - Santorini Luxury Suites in Akrotiri
While the journey from ship to the islands capital may not sound particularly luxurious, once visitors have arrive atop the two hundred and sixty foot cliff and are greeted with a view of the natural Caldera that forms and integral part of the islands geological foundation they are often lost for words.

Most of the Santorini luxury hotels are especially designed to maximize each room’s viewing opportunities of this item of outstanding natural beauty.

The other main attraction of the island in addition to the breathtaking landscape is the famous Santorini sunset which is spectacular when watched from the top of one the cliffs surrounding the Caldera either from a hotel balcony or one of the many terraces.

The beaches of Santorini are not like other beaches in Greece. They are much different due to their special geological features. Black and red volcanic pebbles lay the shores of Santorini beaches providing unique ambiance. The Red beach is is one of the most famous beaches of Santorini, located in the south part, near the ancient village of Akrotiri. The cliffs are of red and black colored volcanic rocks, while the sand is black and red as well. Near the Red beach is the White beach which is covered by gray, black and white sand, surrounded by huge white cliffs. The White beach can be accessed by boat only. On the eastern side of the island there are five very popular beaches, the Agios Georgios beach, Perivolos beach (which is the longest black sand beach of Santorini), Perissa beach, Kamari beach and Monolithos beach. All of them are very well organized, with playgrounds, water sports, restaurants, bars, cafes and of course luxury hotels, apartments and rooms.
