Discover the ‘Medieval’ Santorini… Visit the village of Pyrgos
When you
will decide to discover the world outside the paradise of Maison Des Lys, then one of the best places to
visit is the small village
of Pyrgos.
The village of Pyrgos, Santorini represents ideally the Medieval 'face' of the island! |
The
‘Medieval’ face of Santorini exhilarates at this beautiful small village of
about 600 residents. Pyrgos, in 1995, was declared "Protected Historical
Monument." It is located
7.5 km
from Fira on the east side of the island and because it is built on a
comparatively higher altitude, Pyrgos is visible from afar on many of the
routes that you may choose in order to explore the island.
It is one
of the few Santorini villages that are active and lively all year around. This
is basically due to its 600 residents who are active in almost every sector,
such as tourism, shops, wineries, rural jobs and merchandising. Residents are
very proud of their village and they have put a great effort during the last
decades to revive the unique beauties of their picturesque village.
Village of Pyrgos, Santorini ... here you will find many stylish well-restored Cycladic and Neoclassical buildings! |
As a
result, hundreds of travellers visit their hospitable village that is
surrounded by small chapels and the characteristic Santorinian vineyards. When
you will visit the village of Pyrgos you are strongly advised to climb up to
the castle, explore the picturesque streets with well-restored
Cycladic and Neoclassical buildings on their sides, enjoy the sunset on the top
of Kastelli and if you are religious then you should visit the Monastery
of ‘Agios Ilias’ which stands proudly
above Pyrgos.
Village of Pyrgos, Santorini ... here, words fail to fully describe the countless picturesque beauties of this place! |
But the
greatest sightseeing of the village is its Cultural Village
‘I Santorini pou efige’ (The Santorini that is gone). This is a traditional
complex, built in 1895 and restored recently by its owner Giannis
Drosos-Xrysos. Giannis wanted to create a place that could give the opportunity
to the visitor to enjoy a museum-style exhibition of artefacts, such as objects
of traditional everyday life and photographs that reflect
the formerly traditional island life and economic activities of the inhabitants
of the past eras. It is a kind of a folklore museum.
Village of Pyrgos, Santorini ...the entrance to the Cultural Village! |
There you will have the opportunity to learn about the process of wine
production, processing tomatoes and fava beans, and how the mansion and
homestead used to look like. You will see many photos and walk through the
authentic family canava. Until the 20th century the settlements on the island
or in the countryside outside Kastelia used to have many canaves (wineries).
Almost every house used to have one.
Santorini ... traditionally built canaves are a great part of the island's great winery history and production |
Canaves used to look like man-made caves. In their auxiliary spaces
there used to be stables or a small kitchen for preparing light meals. Canaves
offered ideal conditions for wine maturing for they were creating just amounts
of humidity and stable temperatures. With the passage of time, the wine
production on the island grew in numbers and speed, therefore eventually
canaves were replaced by modern wine-production facilities.
Traditional canaves are still preserved in Messaria, Megaloxori,
Episkopi Gonia and Exo Gonia.
